What is the climate in Tajikistan and when to go to make the most of the country?

In Tajikistan, the climate is arid continental, with cold winters and hot, sunny summers. As a mountainous country, there are temperature and precipitation variations depending on altitude and mountain position. If you travel via the Pamir route, the best time to visit Tajikistan is from late May to late September; you pass through very high mountain passes that are otherwise snow‑covered and inaccessible outside this period. July, hot and sunny, is the ideal time to head to the mountains, while in Dushanbe it is stiflingly hot. If you want to combine mountain trekking with a bit of cultural visits to villages, then late April to May is ideal – nights get colder on the ascent, but it won't be like a furnace on the ground, making museum visits much more pleasant.
