Scotland has an oceanic climate that is cool and very changeable. A single day can bring a mix of sun, clouds, rain, and wind—which also contributes to the spectacular nature of the landscapes.

Spring (March through May): about 7 to 14 °C. Often a wonderful time of year, with longer days and generally fewer visitors.

Summer (June through August): An average of 12 to 19 °C, sometimes exceeding 20 °C. The days are very long, but rain and wind are still possible.

Fall (September through November): 7 to 15 °C. Magnificent fall colors in the Highlands, with weather that gradually becomes wetter.

Winter (December through February): Generally 0 to 8 °C. Snow is possible, especially in the Highlands and at higher elevations, with short days.

The west coast and the Highlands are generally wetter and windier, while Edinburgh and the eastern part of the country are noticeably drier.

For travel, May, June, and September often offer an excellent balance between weather, daylight hours, and crowds. In July and August, watch out for midges—those tiny insects that are particularly prevalent in the Highlands.
