Malaysia: The Most Beautiful Islands in Malaysia

When you think of a trip to Malaysia, the first destination that comes to mind is Kuala Lumpur. But did you know that in addition to its capital, this Southeast Asian country is also home to some of the world’s most beautiful islands—perfect destinations for diving enthusiasts? SoGuide has compiled a list of the best beaches in Malaysia.

The Perhentian Islands

Pulau Perhentian is like a refreshing escape from city life. This paradise is located on the northeast coast of the Malaysian peninsula and is surrounded by turquoise waters. Swimming, diving, and snorkeling are just a few of the water activities you can enjoy on the island. But the island’s main attraction is sunbathing on the fine sandy beach!

Tioman Island

The second island on our list is a pear-shaped island: Tioman Island. This tropical dream destination is an absolute must-visit on your list of things to do in Malaysia. In addition to its powdery beaches and magnificent coral reefs, Tioman Island is home to a picturesque waterfall that adds to the remarkable diversity of this tropical destination. Tioman Island’s beauty dates back to the end of 1958. In the 1970s, it was even considered one of the most beautiful islands in the world. And to this day, it boasts some of the most beautiful beaches in Malaysia that you can find in this Southeast Asian country.

Langkawi Island

Located near the Thai border, legend has it that a woman cursed the island in 1819. After this curse, the island fell under the control of Thai invaders and the population starved. But this is, of course, only a legend. It wasn’t until 1986 that Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamed turned it into a resort destination. He also declared it a duty-free island, and that is how a beautiful and thriving attraction for Malaysia began.

Penang Island

Penang is nicknamed the “Pearl of the Orient” and holds an important place on the maritime trade route. Its diversity of cultures, landmarks, and cuisine has made it a must-visit destination in Malaysia! It was also named one of the 17 best global tourist destinations in 2017 by CNN.

Labuan

Labuan is known as Malaysia’s offshore financial center. But aside from business matters, another reason you should visit this Malaysian attraction is wreck diving. Many ships have sunk in the waters off Labuan and have become a major draw for divers. There is also a military cemetery that holds an annual ceremony for soldiers who died during World War II.

Layang Layang

Also known as “Swallow Reef,” Layang Layang is located 300 km northwest of the coast of Sabah, Malaysia. This is where the Malaysian naval base was originally located. It has been named one of the top ten diving destinations in the world, thanks in particular to its exceptional underwater world, its cliffs plunging 2,000 meters deep, and its breathtaking ocean landscapes. You can easily reach this island by taking a flight from Kota Kinabalu.

Sipadan Island

Sipadan is located off the east coast of Sabah. It is famous not only for its beautiful beach but also for its breathtaking underwater world. An ideal vacation spot for diving enthusiasts, it is also home to one of the most stunning underwater worlds in the world.

Redang Island

Redang’s rich marine life is just one of the reasons why this Malaysian destination attracts a steady stream of tourists. Redang Island is one of the largest islands in the Malaysian Peninsula, boasting over 500 coral reefs and 3,000 species of fish that draw diving enthusiasts from around the world.

Rawa Island

Set foot on the pristine white-sand beaches of Rawa Island. This spot is a favorite among Malaysians and Singaporeans. The island is the perfect getaway for travelers seeking their own secluded tropical destination. For adventurers, hiking to the island’s summit is a popular activity.

Pangkor Island

Although it isn’t as popular as other Malaysian beaches such as Penang and Langkawi, Pangkor has a unique charm that makes it one of Malaysia’s top vacation spots. In addition to water sports, this small island is home to many attractions that are perfect for your trip to Malaysia. Must-see tourist spots include the Dutch Fort, Tiger Rock, and the Foo Lin Kong Temple, where you can find a miniature version of the Great Wall of China.
