Discovering the Gili Islands

If you’re traveling to Bali and want to enjoy a postcard-perfect landscape with long white-sand beaches and turquoise waters, all home to sea turtles, then don’t hesitate—head to the Gili Islands. Located in the heart of the Indian Ocean, this archipelago consists of three distinct islands: Gili Air, Gili Trawangan, and Gili Meno. Cars and other motor vehicles are prohibited on these three islands. Only horses and bicycles are allowed. Far from the hustle and bustle of streets sometimes crowded with scooters or cars, you can enjoy a peaceful, calmer, and magical atmosphere. These three islands are small, and during your stay, you can easily explore them entirely on foot or by bike.

To get to the Gili Islands, you’ll need to take a boat. Generally, travelers arrive from Bali, and there are at least 5 or 6 ports serving the islands. You can easily find the necessary information on-site or by browsing the internet. The fastest option is to take a speedboat, which takes between 1.5 and 3 hours depending on your departure point. For a more economical option—and if you have time—opt for a traditional boat instead (expect a 5-hour journey). From Lombok, the boat ride takes just 10 minutes. Let’s take a closer look at these three charming islands.

1/ The Gili Islands: Gili Trawangan Gili T. or Gili Trawangan is the most popular of the three islands. It’s also the liveliest and best known for its nightlife. In the evening, if you’re a partygoer, you’ll find plenty to keep you entertained—don’t miss the famous beach parties. You’ll meet people from all over the world and easily share a few drinks with fellow travelers. But for a more peaceful experience, head to Gili Meno.

2/ The Gili Islands: Gili Meno Gili Meno is the quietest of the three islands and also the smallest. It’s an island where you can take some time for yourself. Explore, contemplate, and breathe! In the center of the island is a lovely lake, easily accessible on foot or by bike. This island is very popular with couples. There are beautiful, quiet beaches, and if you explore the island, you might even find one all to yourself. On the agenda: yoga on the beach, meditation, sunbathing, and exploring the underwater world. All in a calm and relaxed atmosphere. The nightlife here is therefore less lively than on Gili Trawangan. It’s the perfect opportunity to grab a good book and watch the sunset over the turquoise water.

3/ The Gili Islands: Gili Air Gili Air strikes a balance between party-loving Gili Trawangan and tranquil Gili Meno. There are plenty of restaurants and bars, but Gili Air remains peaceful. Even though you’ll find some lively streets, Gili Air stays peaceful. You can go for a bike ride and discover new spots for lunch overlooking the sea. Gili Air is also the perfect place to do nothing and simply admire magnificent sunsets; this island likely has the most beautiful beaches. The only risk you take when coming to Gili Air is that you won’t want to leave…
