What to eat in Cuba?

To understand Cuban cuisine is to understand the soul of this Caribbean nation. Its flavors, traditional recipes, and spices come together to create delicious and unique dishes. Although you can find Cuban food all over the world, nothing beats going straight to the source. Ready to pack your bags? Discover the most popular Cuban dishes you MUST try in Cuba

1/ Picadillo

You’ll find variations of this traditional dish throughout Latin America and even in the Philippines. Each region has its own twist. In Cuba, the recipe includes ground beef, capers, green olives, and raisins. It’s sometimes eaten on its own over rice, or you’ll find it as a filling for tacos and pastries.

2/ Maduros

It’s so simple. So perfect. Sometimes called plátanos maduros, these sweet fried plantains are the quintessential Cuban dessert. Looks delicious, doesn’t it?

3/ Ropa Vieja de Cuba

If you remember a little of your high school Spanish, this name will probably sound a bit odd to you. Known as “old clothes” in Spanish, this Cuban national dish looks like a pile of colorful “rags” with its shredded beef and vegetables, richly seasoned.

4/ Tamales de Cuba

This one is a local treasure. Originating in Mesoamerica, tamales are typically stuffed with a mixture of corn dough and meat, then wrapped in a corn husk or banana leaf. SoGuide Tip: Remove the wrapper before eating!

#5/ Cuban Flan The Spanish brought this dish to the New World, and it was a hit from day one. You may have already tried it, but you’ll definitely want to try it again in Cuba! Why? While flan is often made with fresh milk, in Cuba, it’s cooked with evaporated and condensed milk. It’s a real treat!

Also not to be missed: Tres Leches cake, as well as churros and chips from street vendors.

6/ Cuban sandwich

Also known as “Cubans,” they’re too good to ignore! First made in Florida by Cuban immigrants, this sandwich features a type of traditional Cuban bread stuffed with ham or roast pork and topped with Swiss cheese, pickles, and mustard.

7/ Cuban Black Bean Soup

Nothing beats good old comfort food! This hearty vegetarian dish is seasoned with bay leaves, garlic, cumin, and paprika, then topped with a dollop of sour cream.

8/ Yuca con mojo from Cuba

Yuca is a delicious vegetable from the cassava family. Cooked in a vibrant sauce made with garlic, lime, and olive oil, it’s another of Cuba’s best vegetarian dishes.

9/ Arroz con pollo

The Western cousin of paella, this rice dish features chicken and onions simmered in garlic and tomatoes. Arroz con pollo is a very comforting dish and isn’t too hard to master!

10/ LechĂłn Asado

This roasted suckling pig is a special treat prepared by burying the meat in the ground and then covering it with banana leaves. Sometimes served with a few chopped herbs or a squeeze of lime, it’s a real treat!

11/ Drinks

You’ll definitely want to try a mojito (or two!) while you’re there. Made with rum, mint leaves, sparkling water, fresh lime juice, and a little sugar, it’s a very refreshing drink!

Other must-try drinks: Rum, Daiquiris, Pina Coladas, and Cuban coffee!
