Tips for Traveling on a Budget in Bali
Discover tips for traveling to Bali on a budget

Bali can be cheap or expensive; it all depends on what you’re looking for. It’s a destination for backpackers, offering budget treks, honeymoons, upscale beach resorts, and yoga retreats. Bali is a destination for every type of traveler. If you’re looking to save money while traveling in Bali, here are some tips and tricks to help you cut costs.
#1/ Eat Local Food Stay away from Western restaurants if you want to save money and sample the local cuisine! Warungs are inexpensive, small, and often family-run restaurants. They are by far the cheapest places to eat in Bali—try to eat at authentic warungs, not tourist-oriented ones!
2/ Bargain
Nothing is ever at face value in Indonesia. Bargain hard and bargain often. Never pay the first price you’re quoted.
3/ Head North
The southern part of Bali (Kuta, Ubud, Seminyak, etc.) is the most popular—and also the most expensive—part of the island. If you head to the beaches in northern or northeastern Bali, you’ll find that prices are about half as much, and you can find better deals on accommodations.
4/ Save money on ridesharing
Uber is much cheaper than taxis in Bali. It’s the best way to get around town so you don’t have to wait for the bus or pay for a taxi. The Uber Pool option lets you share a ride to save even more money, but you can also book your own car.
5/ Drink on the cheap in Bali
Save money on alcohol by taking advantage of happy hours, or by buying your drinks at a local store instead of at a bar. This is the cheapest way to party, and a little night out with friends on the beach is tempting, isn’t it?
6/ Take the free shuttles
Almost all budget accommodations offer free transfers to the airport. Take advantage of this to save money!
7/ Activities Worth Spending Your Money On
Mount Batur is touristy, but it’s definitely worth it. Watching the sunrise over Bali is magical. With free admission, it’s an excellent option for those on a tight budget.
Mount Batur: A Budget-Friendly Excursion in Bali You can also find free yoga classes on Kuta Beach and plenty of options in Ubud.
Surfing in Bali is a great activity for beginners, and prices are much lower than in many other countries.
For scuba diving, head to Gili Trawangan. And although it’s very touristy, the prices are quite reasonable.
